NON-PARTISAN POLICY
of The
LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS ALACHUA COUNTY/GAINESVILLE
March 2005
The League decided in 1920 that the best method of helping 20 million newly
enfranchised women to carry out their responsibilities was by neither supporting
nor opposing any political party or candidate for public office. Over the years,
this commitment has served the League well by making it a recognized force in
molding political leaders, shaping public policy and promoting informed citizen
participation in government. Thousands of League members, scrupulously fair and
honest in their dealings with everyone, have gone before us, reinforcing our
reputation of being a highly trustworthy, unique organization.
The mission statement of the League captures the essence of its 85 year
history: "The League of Women Voters, a non partisan political organization,
encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government,
works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences
public policy through education and advocacy."
Members must carefully guard that ethic, ensuring that the trust others have
in us is well placed.
