What is
Gerrymandering?
In politics, the rearrangement of voting districts to
favor the party in power...
to create as many districts as possible in areas of known support and to
concentrate the opposition's strength into as few districts as possible.
What is the problem
with Gerrymandered Districts?
- The result is bizarrely shaped, uncompetitive districts that
senselessly divide, Florida's cities, counties and neighborhoods.
- Voters have few choices or competitive races.
- Voters in these districts do not share common needs and objectives.
- Voters have less opportunity to connect with their elected officials.
THE SOLUTION
Clear, non-political standards that will require districts to be fairly
drawn, compact and community based while preserving equal opportunities
for minority voters. Fair
Districts Florida is working to help establish these standards!
What
is Fair Districts Florida?
Fair Districts Florida is a nonpartisan state
committee working to
reform the way our state draws legislative and congressional district
lines by establishing constitutionally mandated fairness standards.
FairDistrictsFlorida.org has drafted two amendments to
the Florida
Constitution which it plans to put on the 2010 ballot through the
citizen initiative process. These amendments would establish fairness
standards for use in creating
legislative and congressional district boundaries.
